Pycon 2010 in Atlanta

2009 has been a tough economic year for many developers, I am sure. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of chatter on Twitter about PyCon (PyCon is the largest annual gathering for the community using and developing the open-source Python programming language), which is being held in February 2010 in Atlanta.

Unfortunately, some of the Twitter chatter are from tweets saying they cannot attend Pycon due to budget constraints. Here are some samples:

pycon wish 1

pycon wish2

pycon wish3

Ask for help and you may get it. PyCon is offering two type of grants for those in need.

The Python Software Foundation has two grants to help people attend PyCon 2010. If you would like to come to PyCon but can't afford it, the PSF may be able to help you in with:

  1. Python Software Foundation Grant- Financial aid via the PSF Grant can be used to help with registration, lodging and transportation.
  2. Financial Assistance Grant for Women - Financial aid via the Financial Assistance Grant for Women can be used to help pay for registration, lodging, tutorial and transportation costs.

Good odds for women Python Developers.
I haven't been seeing much tweets from women, and I am guessing that they won't have a ton of applicants. So, if you are a woman, you may have good odds on getting the grant. And for the guys who are going to wear the "Python is for Girls T-shirt" that Guido van Rossum Tweeted about last week (awesome t-shirt btw)- that won't get you in for the grant for women!

Read more about Pycons grants and application process here.

Very important: Deadline is tomorrow - December 22, 2009 - so get your application in now!

For some of the ActiveState team, they are very lucky to be going to PyCon in Atlanta in February 2010. So make sure you follow us on Twitter ( so we can connect with you leading up to and during PyCon!
