Komodo 6.0 Beta 3: Faster, More Stable, Invoke Tool panel
by

, August 4, 2010

We (ActiveState) released Komodo 6.0 beta 3 today and we want your feedback. If you tried beta 2 from about a month ago and hit stability issues, I’m pleased to note that we’ve squashed a few major crasher bugs: beta 3 is much more stable. We’ve made some significant performance improvements as well. Update via Komodo’s Help > Check for Updates… menu entry and give it another try. If you are a current Komodo IDE 5 or Komodo Edit 5 user; in the market for a new Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby, JavaScript, Tcl, XML, HTML, CSS IDE or editor; interested in hacking on an open source editor; or just curious please download the beta:

Read some of the details below and tell us how you really feel:

What’s New in Beta 3?

    • improved startup and shutdown speed

What’s New in Komodo 6?

A lot. HTML 5 autocomplete. CSS 3 autocomplete. Full Python 3 support (debugging, syntax checking, autocomplete, code browsing). A new Database Explorer tool for quickly exploring SQL databases (SQLite out of the box and extensions for MySQL and Oracle, with plans for Postgres). A new project system called “Places” (mostly complete) that adds a file system browser (local and remote). New publishing support for syncing a directory with a remote machine. Additions to Komodo’s Hyperlinks for quickly navigating to file references. Added support for PHP, Perl, Ruby and JavaScript regular expression debugging with Komodo’s excellent Rx tool. See the Komodo 6.0 Features post for a full outline.

Your feedback please

Komodo 6 is still months (a couple at least) away from a final release. We’d love to have your input on how we can polish and improve on the above work and how we can make Komodo IDE and Komodo Edit tools that help you get your coding work done faster. Please subscribe to this blog or follow @activestate on twitter for coming posts that go into detail on what’s coming and new in Komodo 6. And please give us your feedback. Enjoy.

thanks for the update, though the download link to Komodo Edit 6.0.0.b3 isn't working (beta 2 is still latest Komodo edit download). I found the beta 3 download here: http://downloads.activestate.com/Komodo/releases/6.0.0b3/

cheers

@Huyby: Thanks. Should be fixed in the next 30 minutes. Cheers.

One thing I use in project view a lot is the search for file by name feature. With the ability to only have one project open, this has been less useful, are there plans to add a search to the "Places" pane?

@Matthew: We had tried it, but the initial implementation had some poor performance problems that meant that a more involved solution was required. I've started this bug to track this. Not sure if we'll be able to implement something like this immediately. Cheers.

First time running make my system hang. But after reboot the system, it runs smoothly. Some addons are not working (they are under development I think).
