What is Stackato? A private PaaS on a micro cloud, vSphere, or Amazon EC2

If you haven't been following our news the past few months, you may be wondering, What is Stackato? Even if you have heard of Stackato, you may still be asking yourself,  What is a PaaS, and Why  would I choose a private PaaS?

Let's start at the start. ActiveState recently launched Stackato Beta, the cloud platform for creating your private PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service). Stackato, based on Cloud Foundry, gives you the choice, agility, and security to enable a private PaaS for your enterprise: deploy apps to a private cloud in less than 15 minutes.

Back to those other questions:

What is a PaaS, and Why would I choose one? ActiveState's CEO Bart Copeland recently wrote a blog post addressing these very questions. Dir. of Enteprise Product Management, Diane Mueller, also covered these topics in this recently published article on O'Reilly Answers.

Why Private PaaS Is Not an Oxymoron

Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2011
Time: 10:00 - 11:00 AM PST (13:00 - 14:00 EST)

When you hear of PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) what typically comes to mind are names like Heroku, EngineYard, DotCloud, and Public PaaS providers. With the increasing focus on development of SaaS applications and some clear advantages to placing IT infrastructure in the cloud, these PaaS providers have had some trouble gaining significant traction with enterprises despite obvious advantages. There is an emerging trend where enterprises require PaaS capabilities, but are demanding it on their own terms. They want a PaaS behind their own firewall to enable a secure cloud--a private PaaS.
