The Challenge

Plixer International provides software solutions that answer key network management questions and give network managers a clear view into:

  • Whose end system is causing the most traffic
  • What applications are used the most
  • When unusual traffic occurs
  • Where on the network connections are affected by unusual traffic patterns

Since 1999, the Plixer team has worked on some of the world's largest networks. Thousands of companies around the world use Plixer to analyze traffic flow, log and manage network activity.

Focusing on the Right Things

Scrutinizer is one of Plixer's network analysis tools. Written partially in Perl, Scrutinizer provides detailed network utilization information about the users and applications that cause the most network traffic. Using NetFlow, IPFIX and sFlow, Scrutinizer is able to retrieve the traffic details and present them in a detailed graphical view. Marc Bilodeau is the CTO at Plixer and he has guided the development of Scrutinizer from the very start.

As Scrutinizer matured, Bilodeau wanted his engineering team to concentrate time and energy on improving its core features rather than rebuilding and customizing installations for each customer's unique environment.

The Solution

Plixer Discovers Pain-Free Perl

Initially, Plixer solutions were developed solely for the Windows platform. Recognized as the premiere Perl distribution for Windows, ActivePerl by ActiveState was the best way to implement Perl solutions on the Windows platform. Plixer continues to use the ActivePerl distribution on additional operating systems as they are rolled out. By using ActivePerl, Plixer directly benefited by shortened development cycles, increased efficiency and easy, out-of-the-box enterprise licensing.

Bilodeau says assuring customers that its solutions use a standard, enterprise-level Perl build has become an enticing selling feature. That is, in part, because the open source software integrates easily into existing customer solutions and onto a single server.

Power Boosting with ActivePerl Pro Studio

Bilodeau says another key ActivePerl selling point is that it comes packaged with a development and distribution toolset. With ActivePerl Pro Studio, Plixer can provide a standard method of development and deployment to its customers.

The Result

No More Licensing Hassles

ActivePerl guarantees that Plixer's Perl licensing requirements are entirely taken care of. The ActivePerl OEM Licensing package is a shortcut to cost-effective redistribution rights for the fully tested Perl distribution. Out-of-the-box licensing means less homework and administration for Plixer.

"At the time and to this day, ActiveState has provided us with virtually all of our Perl development needs. We know they are the leaders in the industry. ActivePerl continues to provide us with everything we need to deliver quality products to our customers. We're a very happy ActiveState customer," said Bilodeau.
