It’s that time of year again – our favourite blogs of the year! The selection criterion was simple: which blogs did we remember the most, told an interesting story or were the most entertaining. Without further ado, here they are in chronological order:

  1. Unravelling the Internet of Things: What Does it Really Mean to be on the IOT?
In this blog from early on in the year, John Wetherill talks about all things IoT. He examines its emergence, what it means to be IoT, and where it’s all going. It’s a really interesting piece and everyone should check it out.
  2. Happy Birthday Docker. And Welcome to the Slope of Enlightenment
In this thoroughly entertaining blog, John talks about his introduction to Docker and its impact on application deployment. Gordon the Turtle even makes an appearance!
  3. Microservices Revisited: An Interview with Adrian Cockcroft
In his continued exploration of Microservices, John speaks with Adrian Cockcroft, former Chief Architect and Director of Web Engineering at Netflix. They talk all things microservices and the impacts it can have.
  4. ActiveState: What’s Next
Following the biggest announcement of the year for ActiveState, CEO Bart Copeland talks about what the future holds for ActiveState.
  5. PeaceGeeks: Changing the World Through Technology
Philanthropy and technology go together like peanut butter and jelly! We chatted with Renee Black, founder of PeaceGeeks, about how they are changing the world through technology.
  6. ActivePython vs. Open Source Python: What’s the Difference
Being new to the ActiveState language distributions, I found this blog by Jennifer Lawler very informative on the different licenses available for ActivePython and how it differentiates itself from open source Python.
  7. Python GUI Programming: wxPython vs. tkinter
Our Director of Engineering, Tom Radcliffe, wrote a really interesting blog on wxPython and tkinter. I’m not a developer or will work with any of this, but I found it really fascinating.
