Andy McKay: Using SMS in the Developing World

RapidSMS is an open source project for messaging, data collection and co-ordination over SMS. It’s used throughout the world for a variety of projects, from fighting child malnutrition and malaria to monitoring elections.

Last month we asked, "Are you using ActivePerl, ActivePython or ActiveTcl to build something cool and curious?" and we got submissions for some very interesting projects.

We are pleased to present the following winners and describe their projects:

Last week, we conducted an informal poll amongst 70 IT professionals including a mix of engineers, information architects, lawyers and CIOs. The survey was conducted in a webinar entitled “Safeguarding against the risks of improper open source licensing – valuable lessons for software/hardware vendors” by Greg Olson, a senior partner at Olliance Group and Bart Copeland, President and CEO of ActiveState.

Two things stood out in the poll results:

The Cool Apps, Cool Projects Contest is your chance to shine and showcase to your peers how you are using ActivePerl, ActivePython and ActiveTcl for something weird, cool or funky (you can also submit one of your friends' projects).

Cisco Toolapalooza, Cisco's very own annual tradeshow is happening again, and this year ActiveState is attending. Every year, Cisco invites vendors working with Cisco to attend, exhibit, present to Cisco employees and network with other Cisco vendors. The event brings together internal and external software testing and software development tool vendors and professionals for two days of tradeshow and presentations. The event will take place April 20-21st at the Cisco Campus in San Jose.
